Day 361

Elizabeth

“Wake up.”

He's back.

Sitting on my makeshift bed, I realize that Joseph's voice has finally returned to my head. I was expecting him all day yesterday, but he stayed away. I even started to wonder whether maybe he wasn't going to come back, whether he might have just rotted to nothing, but now I can feel him flooding into my mind once again.

“Sorry,” he continues, “I know you were sleeping. I might not have been entirely honest with you before, I can see your thoughts. When I entered your mind just now, you were dreaming.”

“No,” I reply instinctively, “I wasn't.”

“Maybe you don't remember,” he replies, “but you were. You were dreaming of home, of the time before all of this madness began. You were dreaming of a family meal, in your apartment in Manhattan. You were there with your parents, and your brother, but... something was wrong. Something to do with your mother.” He pauses. “Elizabeth, you don't remember the sound of your mother's voice, do you?”

I flinch.

He's right, but I don't want to admit that. Not to anyone.

“You were trying to hear her in the dream,” he continues, “and it wasn't working. She was speaking with a voice, but it wasn't the right one. And you were trying so desperately, weren't you? Oh, it was so sad to feel your efforts, and to know that you were losing hope. It's such an odd thing to forget, isn't it? You must be feeling so -”

“Does that matter right now?” I ask, not wanting to relieve whatever dream I might have been having. “It's none of your business. Anyway, what do you want?”

“Smart girl,” he says. “You know that the past is pain. I've been having a long think about the things I saw on those monitors the other day, Elizabeth, and I finally know what I'm going to do. I hope you had a good rest yesterday, because today I'm going to be ordering you around quite a lot.”

“As long as you keep your side of the bargain,” I reply, “I'll keep mine. I want to find my father, and I want to get us away from this place. Promise me you'll help me do that.”

“I promise I'll try,” he tells me. “I can't promise I'll succeed, but you have my word that I'll do my best. I'm afraid that's as fair as I can be, but I hope you'll appreciate that I'm being honest. Now, are we ready to put my plan into action?”

“Okay,” I say, even though I'm still feeling a little uncertain. “Where do we start?”
